| Rube Goldberg Machine Contest 2008 |
|
   |
Last Thursday, Jan. 31, the Engineering Wing hosted the 2008 Rube Goldberg Machine contest for Washington State Community College. Three teams from the Engineering Materials class participated in the event. The contest's goal was to create a overly complex machine that would put together a common hamburger.
Cascading condiments, falling marbles, popping balloons, ramps, levers, plastic rods, rubber balls and toy race cars finally gave way to a winning team. Engineering Materials students Ann Leach, Chris Robinson and Jacob Snyder became the victors with their conveyor belt driven "Wimpy's Hamburger Machine." By winning they have earned opportunity to compete in the regional event at the University of Toledo on Feb. 17.

| Evergreen Arts & Humanities Series: Ragamala a success! |
We received this letter from Tanya Wilder, Chair of the Evergreen Arts & Humanities Series |
Last night’s (Jan. 31) performance was a HUGE success, and I deeply appreciate everyone’s assistance in preparing for and pulling off the event. We had over 300 people here, and we had to turn some folks away for lack of space to seat them. We couldn’t have asked for a better evening…over the top attendance, very, very satisfied guests, and very, very happy performers.
Thank you:
- Tepe for his assistance in advertising, introducing the event, recording the WMOA spots, taking care of survey collection.
- Dr. Tom for his expertise with the flowers, the reception.
- Tami for getting the refreshments and assisting with the reception.
- Jill, Sandie, and Dean for greeting guests, handing out programs.
- Tom J. and everyone who assisted with moving more chairs into the auditorium for the guests.
- Bill Haas, for his professional assistance with the technical production from the beginning.
- Jeri and Trey for the outstanding publicity.
- Jacky and Dean for taking care of signage.
- Mahala for preparing the surveys, getting the hotel rooms for the entertainers, and all the behind the scenes work she does.
- All the crew from maintenance for hours of assistance in the auditorium, preparation for the evening, and clean-up afterwards.
- Security guards for assistance with traffic.
- Everyone for your commitment to the Series.
As I read the surveys, there are no negative comments (other than a woman who would have preferred the dancers use classical music, like Strauss…not sure I catch on to that one...). Here’s a sample for your enjoyment:
- "We are fortunate to have this series for exposure to other cultures. It’s wonderful for all ages."
- "Enjoyed the evening! Two thumbs up! Thank you! One viberation!" (spelling as on survey)
- "More than anything in the area, this series makes us aware of differences in cultural expersion. It widens our children’s perspective and teaches tolerance of other cultures." (spelling as on survey)
- "Those who didn’t attend missed a once in a lifetime event, here, right in the MOV."
- "It’s very nice that something from another country (tradition) came to Marietta. It makes me warm and fuzzy inside! YAY!"
- "Judging from attendance, the evening had an excellent impact on the community."
- "I think it’s a wonderful experience for the community to be exposed to different styles of music and dance. I wish more could see it."
- "I would never have seen something like this if not for the Evergreen Arts & Humanities Series."
- "Washington County benefited from the opportunity to see such a performance."
- "The EA&H Series provides needed segments of a full arts program for students and adults. This is a needed and enjoyable arts venue."
- "GREAT PLUS!"
- "I like your variety and the opportunity to see programs I would normally have to travel to see for much more money."
- "Good variety…events are always well done."
- "I’ve never been to this campus before. Now that I know where it is, I’ll be very likely to come back."
- "I’ve traveled all around the world, and I’ve never seen something like this!"
Savor the success of last night and take lots of time to kick back this weekend…I might not get out of my PJ’s until Monday morning!
Con sumo agradecimiento y cariño…
T.

| College Goal Sunday |
College Goal Sunday will be held at Washington State Community College on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008 at
2 p.m. This is a wonderful opportunity for students and their families to complete the 2008-2009 FAFSA with the help of financial aid professionals and dedicated volunteers. This event is free and open to any persons needing help, regardless of what college they plan to attend.
If you would like to volunteer to help with this year’s event, please go to www.collegegoalsunday.org and register to become a volunteer. Students can go to the same web site and register now to become a participant. Last year’s event brought 200 people to campus, so help is needed in many areas including registration and helping students with questions.

| Neighborhood Watch safety tip |
Next time you come home for the night and you start to put your keys away, think of this:
It's a security alarm system that you probably already have and requires no installation. Put your car keys beside your bed at night. If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will be set off, and the horn will continue to sound until either you turn it off or the car battery dies. Test it. It will go off from almost everywhere inside your house and It works if you park your car in the driveway or garage.
If your car alarm goes off when someone is trying to break in your house, odds are the criminal won't stick around. After a few seconds, all the neighbors will be looking out their windows to see who is out there. And remember to carry your keys while walking to your car in a parking lot. The alarm performs the same function. This could also be useful for any emergency, such as a heart attack, where you can't reach a phone. Around home when you are outside you should carry your car keys with you in case you have an accident. You can activate the car alarm and then someone will know there's a problem. |
