E-Newsletter for students of Washington State

March 2007

In this issue:
Financial Aid Facts

$Did you know that students receiving financial aid at Washington State can only change their major a maximum of three times? If you are thinking about a change in major, stop by the records office and ask how many changes you have made in the past.  Don’t lose your financial aid by being uninformed!

$Students, in order to receive an Ohio Instructional Grant, you must be registered for 12 credit hours or more.

*****Please be aware that there is no more funding available for the Part Time Ohio Instructional Grant for Spring Quarter!*****

$Now is the time to complete your 2007-2008 FAFSA for next fall!  Once you (and your parents) have your taxes done for 2006, please take the time to renew your FAFSA.  Planning ahead will make your registration a breeze.

$Attention students who use Veterans Benefits please stop by the Financial Aid Office and let Emily Schuck know how many credit hours you will be taking spring quarter!

If you have questions about your financial aid, please stop by the financial aid office inside student services or e-mail the director at eschuck@wscc.edu.

Courtesy phones come to campus

The day of pay phones on the Washington State campus has passed. If you haven't noticed recently, the pay phones that used to be located in various spots on campus, like near the Commons area of the Main Building, are gone. Use of these phones had decreased to a level where the phones were no longer economically feasible.

However, understanding that on occasion urgent calls need to be made by students or visitors, courtesy phones are being installed. The first such phone is located at the front desk in the Main Building reception area. Another will soon be installed in the Learning Center in the A&S Center.

These phones are to be used for internal calls or local phone calls. Long distance calls require a credit card call.

Other areas where courtesy phones might be justified around campus are still under consideration.

New communication course introduced

Effective small group communication is essential in our society. Everything from business to service organizations to community projects require that the “group members” involved understand the dynamics of communication in small groups. A new class to be offered beginning March 26 at Washington State Community College will introduce students to several theories of group dynamics and the social roles of each team member. Students in the class will develop a team identity, work toward group cohesion, and be involved in group decision making and presenting their ideas as they evolve over the preparation of their team project.

The course, Small Group Communication (Speech200) is scheduled on Monday and Wednesday from 2-3:50 p.m. and earns 4 credit hours. Class begins March 26 and runs through June 6. Dr. Jeanette Hale teaches the course.

Registration for spring quarter courses, including Speech 200, is now open.

Engineering and Industrial students headed to national competition

A national competition that encourages Rube Goldberg Teamstudents to solve a problem with  the most complicated and convoluted invention possible to meet a given task, will include the “The Orange Crusher Amusement Park,” an entry from a team of mechanical engineering students at Washington State Community College. The team competed in Toledo at the regional portion of the Rube Goldberg Challenge on February 23, bringing home a first place award for their contraption made to meet the 2007 assigned task: juice an orange and then pour the juice from a pitcher into a cup in 20 steps or more.

By winning the regional competition, the team earned a spot at the national event, to be held at Purdue University on March 31. Team members include: Anita Beeney, Roger Fickeisen, Shawn Hanger, Kenny Scarbro.  Amy Danison is the team’s instructor.

The Rube Goldberg contest honors the spirit of Rube Goldberg, an artist, inventor, engineer, author and sculptor. He is best known for his comical drawings of crazy contraptions and inventions--artwork that appeared in newspapers throughout the U.S. from the early 1900s to the 1960s. Today the term Rube Goldberg is used to signify anything done in an overly complicated or round-about manner.
Rube Goldberg's cartoons are incredible displays of ingenuity, detailed logic, physics and satire. He poked fun at the many complicated inventions that were available at the beginning of the century, and at the round-about methods people devised for solving their problems.

Today, the Rube Goldberg machine contests and school projects are held across the country. Students use household items to try to build the most complex machine possible, to accomplish a simple task. For example, to turn the page of a book, a machine might include balls, string, various toys, pulley systems, old bicycle parts, mousetraps, recycled junk and more. The wackier the better! By building these crazy contraptions, students gain invaluable skills in creativity and science. Plus, it's fun!

Instead of just "solving" the problem, students have to make the solution as complicated and as convoluted as possible. In fact, the more steps - there's a minimum of twenty - the better the Rube Goldberg Machine. The finished machine is to be no more than five feet tall, six feet wide and six feet deep. The machine has a nine-minute contest time. That means contestants must be able to run the machine completely through its paces once, reset it completely, and run it completely through its paces again, all within nine minutes. Only two people may touch the machine while it is being reset.
