| "Stand out" in a crowd |
Gotcha! It didn't take long for the Halloween gag, cleverly executed by a first-year criminal justice major, to win the adoration of last Thursday's lunch time crowd in the Commons area. Much to the surprise of many an unsuspecting passerby, the mannequin like antics of Sabin Strahler brought shrieks of delight and gasps of fright as the noon hour fast approached. The standing room only crowd played along, eating their lunch and studying diligently, and then, as if on cue, when the black-haired villain strategically stepped into the path of his next un expecting victim, they applauded his performance with robust laughter.
He managed to truly frighten the editor of OnCampus, returning to her office with an egg sandwich in hand. Goose bump laden, and desperately trying to regain composure, she quickly went for her camera. Word has it he managed to terrify a well-known human resource administrative assistant, and shock another administrative assistant, leaving her clutching her heart as she quickly exited stage right.
Strahler is working at the Arbors and didn't feel like making the long haul to Caldwell to change. He decided the Commons area would be as good a place as any to "stand out" with the crowd for lunch.

New to the library |
The library has recently purchased a DVD collection from the National Film Preservation Foundation. The collection, Treasures III: Social Issues in American Film, 1900-1934, is a four-disc set with multiple shorts and feature length movies of original material that deal with atheism, communism, the women's suffrage movement and experimental marriage. All materials are the original movies and shorts that played in the early days of theaters.
The film, Where are my Children, the top grossing film of 1916, is a pro-birth control, anti-abortion drama. There is a short film entitled Trial Marriages that is a slapstick comedy about a man looking for a wife and going through several attempts to find one. Many of these films are about critical issues that are still a concern in today’s society
The collection is on four discs which may circulate individually or collectively. Also available with the collection is a production notes book. There are over thirty short films and feature length movies available that would offer a historical and cultural perspective for any class.

Quilts on display |
Quilts of the library
A sampling of the beautiful quilting handiwork of Dolores Miracle is now on display in the Carson K. Miller Library where her son, Frank, is employed as a Library Technician.
From that first quilt sewed over 50 years ago, Dolores has gone on to make more than 60 quilts over the years. Her designs include traditional patterns as well as her own ideas. She has made pieced, appliqued, cross-stitched, and embroidered quilts. Many include the tiny, fine stitches of hand quilting, while others are knotted or machine stitched.
For almost seven years her quilts have added warmth and beauty to the library’s Great Room. The quilts currently hanging in the library include a pink and green comfort knotted, a nine patch hand-quilted orchid and white block, and a star comfort large stitch (a pattern which she found in a quilt book from our library!). The knotted autumn color quilt and the eight-pointed star quilt, that is also embroidered, complete our collection of 5 quilts.
“My children and grandchildren still use their quilts today,” she proudly added, noting that the quilts have been “well used and much loved” through the years. |
