Service Day Projects

9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance

The AmeriCorps Ohio College Guides held a memorial service in recognition of the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks that took the lives of nearly 3,000 people. Community members, students, faculty and staff met on the front green by the flag pole at 10:00am on Tuesday, September 11, 2012.

As part of the ceremony, a Flag of Honor was raised, along with the American Flag, by the American Legion, and the Marietta VFW performed a gun salute and taps. The Flag of Honor was created from the names of those who perished in the terrorist attacks of 9/11 and was generously donated by the Lowes of Marietta.

The College Guides also held a donation drive, collecting supplies to send to soldiers as care packages. The items collected ranged from toothbrushes and deodorant to beef jerky and snack packs! They partnered with the National Guard to send these care packages overseas.

This was a service project very similar to the one that previous members organized last year. The hope is that this event will become an annual observance here at WSCC.

Washington State Community College will be holding a memorial service in recognition of the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 day attacks which took the lives of nearly 3,000 people. Community members, students, faculty, staff, and family members are all encouraged to come to our service which will take place on campus on the front green by the flag pole. The National Guard will be present for the flag raising ceremony which will take place at 9:00am on Monday, September 12.

AmeriCorps College Guide members will use the memorial service to kick off a donation drive collecting supplies for soldiers. Members hope to receive 2011 donations from September 12 through September 19 in recognition of the anniversary. AmeriCorps members will also be recruiting volunteers on September 12 who will assist in assembling the donations received into care packages, which will be distributed by the Family Readiness Group (FRG) State Headquarters in Columbus, OH to deployed soldiers. The hope is that this event will mark the first anniversary of what will become an annual observance here at WSCC.

Make a Difference Day

October 22, 2011 — In honor of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the WSCC AmeriCorps College Guides and Phi Theta Kappa held a Product Drive benefiting EVE, Inc, a local non-profit agency that benefits victims of domestic violence.

Members kicked off the event on Saturday, October 22nd with a Halloween Costume party that was open to the campus and the community. Just Lunch provided light refreshments and the event included activities such as, pumpkin painting contests, candy corn hole, a costume contest, dance off, and face painting.

Admission to the dance was a suggested donation of $3 at the door or a donation of a product from EVE's wish list. Donations entered participants into a raffle to win one of three free gas cards!

AmeriCorps members collected donations and handed out purple ribbons in the WSCC Commons on Tuesday, October 25th and outside of the Marietta Walmart on Wednesday, October 26th and continued to accept donations through October 28th.

For Make a Difference Day, the AmeriCorps College Guides and the WSCC Phi Theta Kappas were able to raise awareness of domestic violence and collect over $220 and several products for EVE, Inc.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

To honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Washington State Community College's AmeriCorps College Guides and Upward Bound program, along with the Friends of Lower Muskingum River AmeriCorps VISTA member, are planning a canned food drive to help fight hunger in our community.

On Friday, January 13th participants will begin the service project by visiting area houses to place informational door hangers explaining the MLK Day project. Residents who receive the card will be asked to gather canned foods for volunteers to collect the following week.

On Saturday, January 21st, the AmeriCorps State and Vista members, and the UB student volunteers will collect the donations after a brief tour of the Marietta Community Food Pantry where the director will explain the operations and importance of the pantry.

Donations of canned/non-perishable food items will also be collected at the WSCC campus from Tuesday, January 17th through Friday, January 20th. Goods may be dropped off to AmeriCorps College Guides in the Outreach Office in the library, Student Services, the Health Wing, and at the WSCC Learning Center.

Help make this the best King Day of Service yet by making a donation to help end hunger, or by volunteering to help with WSCC's 2012 MLK Day project.
