WSCC Phi Theta Kappa Inducts New Members and Wins Awards at National Conference

On Thursday, May 2nd, the Alpha Rho Gamma Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (PTK) of Washington State Community College (WSCC) held an induction ceremony for new members. PTK is the premier organization for promoting academic achievement among students at two-year colleges. Altogether, 54 students were inducted into the honor society on Thursday evening, and WSCC President Dr. Bradley Ebersole was also inducted as an honorary member of the organization. "Being inducted into PTK is an honor and distinction these students will carry with them throughout their lives", says President Ebersole. "It will certainly enhance their college experience, and will assist as they continue their journey of success." At the induction ceremony, two members of the PTK Executive Board were recognized by President Ebersole: Vice President of Fund Raising Tammy Holshu, and Vice Presidnet of Membership Nathaniel Moening.

The Wendy's® Adoption Scholarship Endowment Fund will provide important financial support to eligible students who seek education opportunities at WSCC. This scholarship opportunity is a result of the partnership between the WSCC Foundation and the generous benefactors, Ray and Kim Blackburn. The Blackburns own Wendy's® franchises in Parkersburg, WV and throughout the Mid-Ohio Valley.

20130512 mathsummit3Washington State Community College (WSCC) held a Math Summit on Friday, April 19th. The summit came during the heart of Community College Month, and its purpose was to bring attention to the math-skills gap that is causing problems for some area high school graduates when they begin math studies at the college level. The day-long summit brought secondary and post-secondary math educators together to brainstorm solutions for this skills gap, particularly as it pertains to lack of retention of previously learned material. Several area math educators and school administrators were in attendance.

"The college is very grateful for these generous contributions from Cummins Bridgeway, Fyda Freightliner, and Hino Motors," comments WSCC President Dr. Bradley Ebersole. "With this valuable equipment, we are able to continue providing the best training of auto and diesel mechanics, who I hope will one day be productive workers for these renowned organizations. These are outstanding partnerships for Washington State."

Local Businesses and Educators Continue Commitment to Encouraging Local Youth to Pursue Careers in Science and Technology

yesdays1resizedWashington State Community College was excited to host the 21st annual Young Engineers and Scientists (YES) Days on April 11 and 12—an event for Washington and Morgan County 7th graders. YES Days activities were spread over two days and taught students about science and engineering careers in the Mid-Ohio Valley, within the state, and beyond. This year, over 700 students from 12 schools participated in the event.
