20th Annual YES Days: May 17-18 @ WSCC
This year marks the 20th anniversary for YES Days – Young Engineers and Scientists Day – an annual event for Washington and Morgan County 7th graders. YES Days activities are spread over two days and teach students about science and engineering careers in the mid-Ohio Valley, within the state, and beyond. Thirteen schools, with 888 students, are participating in the 2012 YES Days, hosted by Washington State Community College (WSCC), on May 17-18th.
"YES Days started out as 'Young Engineers and Scientists Field Days' in 1992, an idea originated from Texas by a young engineer Francisco Vacas," says Mary Lou Moegling, a YES Days organizer for the past twenty years. "Vacas worked at the local Amoco plant (currently Solvay Specialty Polymers) and shared the idea with the Marietta Area Chamber of Commerce's Telesis Leadership Training participants, who decided to put on the event locally."
"YES Days began as promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) careers," according to Shirley Singrees, YES Days 2012 chairperson. The purpose of YES Days is to interest students in math and science before high school, and encourage a college major in the STEM fields.
"One interesting part of YES Days is seeing students from the early years make a complete circle; they first participated as middle school students, then presented for their college majors, and now are back as full-time employees with area businesses and organizations," says Mary Lou Moegling.
In addition to a multitude of events and booths at YES Days, WMOA/WJAW radio station will be doing a live remote at WSCC on Friday, May 18th from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Friends and families of students can tune into the McConnelsville station, WJAW-FM 100.9, to listen in to the day's events and participants.
This year's participating schools include: Marietta City Schools, Warren Local Schools, Fort Frye Local Schools, Wolf Creek Local Schools, Belpre City Schools, Frontier Local Schools, Morgan County Local Schools, St. John Central, St. Mary Elementary, Ohio Valley Service Center, and Cornerstone Cooperative home school system.
Sponsors of this year's YES Days event include: Washington State Community College, Solvay Specialty Polymers, Kraton Polymers, Ohio State Highway Patrol, Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, American Electric Power-Muskingum River Plant, Marietta College-math, computer, and athletic training depts., Washington Electric Co-op., Microtel Inn & Suites, and the Ohio University American Society of Civil Engineers.
