The Firearms Academy at Washington State Community College successfully completed its first-ever run with the graduation of 22 students. The rigorous 45-hour course results in graduates obtaining a WSCC certificate of completion, one semester hour college credit, documentation to apply for a Concealed Carry permit, an Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission (OPOTC) state certificate in firearms, and documentation to apply for an Ohio Department of Public Safety state certificate.

The Firearms Academy started in December 2012 and took place over five consecutive Fridays at the Fort Harmar Rifle Club's indoor and outdoor gun ranges.

"The academy's purpose is for participants to become knowledgeable and well-trained in the safe handling and use of handguns and shotguns," says John Burdette, WSCC public safety academies commander, "We had seven OPOTC-certified instructors, with a combined experience of decades in law enforcement and state certification, training the students. This first run of the Firearms Academy was an absolute hit with all 22 participants successfully completing the course."

Academy graduate Lonnie Lewis, age 69 of Marietta, expressed gratitude for offering the program to the public. "The vast knowledge of the instructors, including their ability to show and explain, was invaluable to those of us without a lot of shooting or police experience," says Lewis.

20-year-old Philip Hughes, of Parkersburg, said the Firearms Academy was not just educational, but also enjoyable. "I learned a lot, met some great people, and overall had fun!" says Hughes, who is one of many Academy graduates who plan on obtaining a Concealed Carry permit.

The next Firearms Academy at WSCC is scheduled for March 10 - 15, plus the introduction of a weekends-only class that starts April 20. Those interested should contact Academy Commander John Burdette at 740.374.8716, ext. 1540.
