WSCC Recognizes Wyatt Baker as October Student of the Month

MARIETTA, Ohio (October 12, 2016) – Washington State Community College (WSCC) is excited to announce nursing student Wyatt Baker as October Student of the Month. The Student of the Month program was created to recognize those students that strive for success by overcoming obstacles and committing to complete their education.

Inspired by the care given his grandmother during her hospital stays, Wyatt Baker knew in high school that he wanted to pursue a career in nursing. "The time that I spent with my grandma through her hospital stays, up to end-of-life care, encouraged me to enter the field," Baker said. "I only hope that I can make a difference in peoples' lives like those nurses did for my grandma."

He began as a WSCC Post Secondary Enrollment Options Student (now called College Credit Plus) working toward and ultimately becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse, but Baker didn't want to stop there. He established a clear vision for his future and decided to continue his education and is set to graduate with his Associate Degree in Nursing next year.

His nursing propensity is apparent to his instructors, co-workers and patients alike. In addition to maintaining an A-average in classroom work and clinical rotations, his patients regularly sing his praises said WSCC Associate Professor Tracey Bogard. "I've received many compliments from his patients on his professionalism. I've heard stories from his co-workers of how he will come to work and help with patients, even in the middle of the night or on his day off, at their request. He truly cares about people."

Baker attributes his success to hard work, compassion and good time management. Currently, while going to school full-time and maintaining excellent grades, he also has a job and volunteers for a local hospice agency. He has no plans to slow down any time soon. Following graduation next spring, he wants to begin working as a nurse and enroll at Ohio University to earn his Bachelor's of Science in Nursing.

Baker is paving the way for other men to consider a career in nursing. With males representing less than 10% of the nursing workforce, this is considered a nontraditional career path. In fact, any occupation that employs less than 25% of either gender is considered to be nontraditional. WSCC recognizes the value that both men and women bring to every field, and has established a week to recognize and encourage students who are, or are considering, a major in a nontraditional program. During the week of October 17, WSCC will be reminding students that men can and do excel in nursing, massage therapy, early childhood education, social services and business administration services. Likewise, there is opportunity for women in careers related to automotive technologies, computer science, criminal justice, engineering and information technology.

While Washington State Community College nursing students enjoy a hands-on approach to their clinicals, thanks to training opportunities at local hospitals, they'll be getting a more personal experience right in their classrooms. During a dedication ceremony yesterday for the Dorothy Fouss Greacen Memorial Human Simulation Lab, the Health Sciences department announced the addition of an iStan human-patient simulator in their newly remodeled nursing lab.
