Medical Administrative Assistant

Are you interested in a medical career? This fast-paced growing field isn't just for doctors and nurses. As a medical administrative assistant you will gain various skills needed for the fast-paced office environment. Through lessons and experience you will develop good interpersonal skills, which will reflect human relations and develop positive attitudes and professional work habits.

Goals:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of current software packages available in today's office environment.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to obtain and maintain employment in a high-paced office environment.
  • Develop good interpersonal skills that will reflect human relations and development of a positive attitude for the office environment.
  • Demonstrate professional work habits such as: punctuality, productivity, verbal and written communication skills, cooperation with fellow workers, and working within the structure of a modern office environment.
  • Explain professional awareness and the importance of confidentiality.
  • Explain the value of lifelong learning through formal and informal experiences in an effort to stay current with employment skills.

Students in the Medical Administrative Assistant program will study the following:

  • Microsoft Windows
  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Medical billing software-Medical Manager
  • Introduction to medical transcription
  • Introduction to ICD-9/CPT coding
  • Pharmacological terminology
  • Voice recognition-Dragon 
  • Students holding the MOS certification may be eligible for advanced placement.

Graduates of the Medical Administrative Assistant program will find careers as medical administrative assistants, medical receptionists, insurance billing clerks, hospital admitting clerks, medical records clerks. They may work in doctor's offices, hospitals, clinics, emergency care centers, and rest homes.

Opportunities include:

  • Competitive starting salary with potential to move into an office management position.
  • Ability to continue your education and earn a bachelor's degree in health information management

The program leads to the Associate of Applied Business degree.
