Industrial Technology: Power Plant Operator

Electric power is a form of energy that each of us has at the tips of our fingers for use and convenience every day. Large power plants scattered across our country operate continuously to provide this convenience as a necessity in our lives. Power plant operators are in high demand as these facilities continue to operate, expand and integrate new technologies into their operations.

This program equips students with the ability to safely and effectively work in a power plant environment. Throughout the program, safety is integrated at all levels, from basic to advanced operations.

Program goals: Upon completion of the program graduates will be able to:

  • Identify various voltage and remote control systems and their operations as they apply to the power industry.
  • Explain the principles of safety, health, and environmental management.
  • Know the types of protective equipment available for the head, face, eyes, ear, respiratory tract, torso and extremities and select the best protective equipment to fit the hazard involved.
  • Utilize various measuring tools and interpret the readings.
  • Work in a team environment to develop a collective hypothesis on basic causes of a problem.
  • Perform appropriate mathematical functions and apply them to various industry problems.
  • Produce technical reports, both orally and written, and present results.
  • Interpret industrial drawings and apply the information to the actual situation.
