William L. Standish '98
Outstanding Community Service
Bill Standish '98 was named the 2012 Distinguished Alumnus for Outstanding Community Service because he exhibits the qualities of exemplary community leadership, concern for the quality of life of others, and promotion of social and cultural enrichment that are hallmarks of Washington State Community College. He has demonstrated an enthusiasm and dedication to community service that is frequently marked by personal kindnesses to benefit others that more often than not go unpublished.
A 1972 Business Administration graduate of Bliss Business College in Columbus, Ohio, he was employed at American Electric Power for 18 years and eventually relocated to the Marietta area where, in 1996 he enrolled in Washington State's Business Management program. After graduating in the spring of 1998 with an associate's degree, he began his banking career at Advantage Bank, where he remained for 15 years until retirement in 2009.
He has held many leadership positions in various community groups and activities in the area, including board seats, chairmanships, and start-up coordinator positions. He has been praised by those who know him best as having "...a real servant's attitude toward his community and those around him." He is a leader who "leads by example and service", is "competent and valuable during crucial times", and is a "selfless volunteer."
Bill has logged many hours in community service helping youth, the community, the hungry, and his church. For example, he has served:
- 11 years with the Marietta High School Band Boosters
- 8 years on the Washington County Red Cross Board
- 12 years as a member, Club President, and Board President of the Marietta Noon Lions
- and other community service opportunities including Marietta Civitan, Marietta Traffic Commission Board, Harvest of Hope, Christ United Methodist Church, and The Right Path.
