step 4

My Homepage

You will now be taken to "My Homepage". If you would like to receive live online tutoring for any subject other than Math please be sure to check the schedule of when subjects are available in the "My File Cabinet" box at the bottom of the page.

How to Use the Whiteboard:

If you are a first time user or would simply like more practice using the whiteboard, we strongly encourage you to click on the practice whiteboard at the bottom of the "My Homepage" page.

This practice whiteboard is a way for you to become familiar with the tools that the live online tutors use during an online tutoring session, particularly the math sessions. Using the practice whiteboard will greatly help the progress of your sessions in the long run.

step 5

Begin Tutoring!

  1. If you are ready to begin your live session with a tutor click on the "Connect with an e-structor now" icon. This will show a drop down menu that will let you select from the courses that are currently offered for live tutoring.

TIP: Have your question up and ready to go on the whiteboard before actually clicking the "submit question" button at the bottom of the page to make the best use of your live session with a tutor.

  2. If you have had previous experience with a certain tutor and would like to meet with them for more help you can select the "Schedule A Personal Session" Icon. This will allow you to meet with a particular tutor as long as you schedule your time at least 48 hours in advance. You can sign up for a 30 minute session at a time.

Note: If you need to cancel a previously scheduled session this also needs to be done at least 48 hours in advance. If this is not done or if you fail to show up for a pre-arranged session we will be billed for this time anyway. If this happens you may be penalized by losing your online tutoring privileges.

Other Options

Other Options for Online Tutoring Include: Submitting Writing and Essays for Feedback
  1. From "My Homepage" submit your writing to be critiqued by a tutor. You will click on the "Submit my Writing" Icon and select the type of writing you are submitting. Most of the time for school assignments you will select "essay center".

  2. You will then be asked to fill in some required fields and be able to attach a document to the site; very much like attaching a document to an email.

Note: Attached files must be MS Word documents (.doc), plain text files (.txt), or in Rich Text format (.rtf). Documents in other formats will be returned to you if they cannot be read. If you have trouble attaching the document there is also a link that will tell you the steps to do this. Click on the "Tell me how" link under the icon on "My Homepage".

  3. Once the paper has been submitted the tutor has 24 hours to critique the writing and make suggestions.

How to Retrieve Your Critiqued Writing:
  1. You will receive an e-mail from SMARTHINKING when an e-structor has commented on your writing.

  2. Go to your Inbox from your SMARTHINKING Home Page.

  3. Locate your essay in your Inbox and click on the name of the essay.

  4. You will see the e-structor's comments on your essay, organized by the areas in which you asked for help and a link to the "marked-up" version of the essay.

  5. To download the marked-up essay with the e-structor's comments, click on the blue "Markup" text under the yellow E-structor's response" bar. Save the document on your hard drive or a floppy. (Hint: make sure that you make a note of the name of the essay and where you save it.)

All Archived sessions that have taken place are also sent to your Inbox on your SMARTHINKING Home Page. They are in the "Archives" section and can be reviewed by students at any time.
