Prospective Students

Upward Bound College Prep Academy

High school students who are interested in attending college but may need extra help in turning that interest into a reality should consider the Upward Bound College Prep Academy.

Eligible students receive tutoring and counseling, as well as study and leadership skills. Upward Bound provides academic, social, cultural, recreational and counseling services to help student build the skills, motivation and self-confidence necessary for success in college.

Students at Belpre, Caldwell, Fort Frye, Frontier,  Marietta, Warren and Waterford schools may participate in Upward Bound.

Eligibility

To be eligible students must meet one of the following:

  • Neither parent has earned a bachelor's (four year) degree.
  • Their family's income does not exceed the federal guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Education.

The Program has two phases:

  • During the school year, Upward Bound students visit Washington State campus one Saturday each month for tutoring, to learn study and leadership skills, and to participate in a wide variety of programs. As a reward for their hard work, students take field trips and recreational activities.
  • During the summer, Upward Bound students take part in a six-week residential program. They live on the Marietta College campus and take interesting courses at Washington State. While living on campus, they enjoy fun social activities and travel, or may have the opportunity to work. In other words, you'll get a taste of what college life is all about.

What is expected of the student:

Students are expected to make a sincere commitment to participate fully in the academic year and summer activities and to challenge themselves at their high schools by undertaking a college preparatory curriculum. Students are also expected to be involved in community service programs.

What does it cost?

NOTHING! The student's family pays nothing for regularly scheduled academic year and summer program activities.
