E-Newsletter for Faculty and Staff of Washington State CC

December 2, 2004

The Carson K. Miller Library hours for intersession are:

Nov. 29-Dec. 22
Monday thru Friday
7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

The library is closed on Saturdays and Sundays and will resume regular hours on Monday, January 3, 2005.

FROM THE DESK OF BYRON HOFFEE: The State of Ohio requires that we conduct an annual fire alarm system inspection/test in all buildings. Our certified contractor performed same in late September noting that the Arts & Sciences building system is prone to intermittent problems and recommended replacing the system. Therefore, the system will be replaced beginning December 20, 2004 and may take up to 5 working days.  We will take every reasonable precaution to minimize any disruption to the normal business day.  They will not intentionally activate the alarm when people are in the building.  If you have any questions or concerns, please call or e-mail my office.

A JOB WELL DONE
During faculty/staff meeting on Monday, several people took an opportunity to recognize co-workers for their contributions. Although there isn't enough room to feature all of them in this issue, a few will be included each week. Watch for more employee-to-employee recognitions in the next issue of OnCampus.

  • Ralph Carbone acknowledged Carole Hancock's work as chair of Social/ Behavioral Science and Public Service.
  • Georgene Johnson recognized the Library staff for their diligent work during fall quarter. She said that the library was full much of the time and that even students expressed their thanks for the help.
  • Rob Kinker recognized all of the folks who have supported growth in the health sciences programs, including the faculty in those programs, as well as folks in Arts & Sciences, Rick Peoples, the bookstore staff, Peggy Peterson, and Byron Hoffee.
Do you know someone at WSCC that should be recognized for A JOB WELL DONE? Send a note to Linda Lockhart with the name(s) and specifics about why they should be recognized so the info can be included in an upcoming OnCampus.

PRACTICAL NURSES PINNED ON NOVEMBER 24

The first group of PNs completing the evening program went through pinning ceremony on Wednesday November 24. Congratulations to the students, and kudos to our nursing faculty.

Ann Stewart recognized her fellow faculty members at Monday's in-service faculty/staff meeting by saying, "Because of the dedication of the full-time day faculty, the evening program can maintain a high level of quality."

Our students--and their future patients -- thank you all. Ann is pictured with several of the newly pinned nurses in this week's OnCampus title bar. Diana Eesley also is featured wearing one of the ball caps she presented to students. Diana repeated the motto on the cap several times during their program: "When in Doubt, Check it Out."

AQIP UPDATE: AQIP CLIPS-ITS joins ONCAMPUS

AQIP -- if you don't recognize the term you haven't been around campus during the past quarter +. This alternative accreditation process--Academic Quality Improvement Program -- was explained briefly by Mark Nutter at the November 29 in-service Faculty/Staff Meeting.

The former process looked at what we had done and what we had accomplished in the past, he said, AQIP looks to the future and says "What can we be doing?"

Action is going into high gear across campus on AQIP mini-projects. AQIP Clips-Its, the AQIP newsletter to keep you updated on the latest AQIP happenings at Washington State, has partnered with OnCampus to bring you broad information in one location. In the future, new issues of Clips-Its will be announced in OnCampus and you will be able to link directly to additional AQIP info by clicking on the AQIP Clips-Its tab at the top of the OnCampus page.

New AQIP Clips-its content--information about current mini-projects--is now posted and can be viewed by clicking here or on the green tab at the top of this page labeled AQIP Clips-its.

Read more about the AQIP process at www.aqip.org.

Thanks to Greg Mitchell for contributing AQIP Clips-Its Content

BARBARA GODFREY RETIRES FROM WASHINGTON STATE

Barbara Godfrey, administrative assistant to VP for Academic Affairs, has a calendar next to her desk with bold Xs through each day that has passed. In the top corner of each daily square is a tiny penciled-in number. Today's is #15. She says that means fifteen more days until she makes her final move in the administrative offices...out the door.

Barbara joined Washington State in February 1995 as the evening secretary/receptionist for continuing education. She worked for Becky Peroni, then dean of continuing ed. After a year in that position, Barbara became an assistant to Peggy Peterson in the administrative offices. Barbara said her first desk in the administrative suite was the reception desk as you enter the door. Later, with the move of administrators to the new library, she and Peggy stayed in the Main Building and Barbara moved further back to the assistant desk at the opposite end of the hall. With the move of the administrative offices back into the main building a couple of years ago, Barbara moved to the only remaining assistant station in the suite. She jokingly said that she had been moved everywhere that she could within that suite, so her next move would have to be out the door.

Colleagues from across campus joined for a surprise party on Tuesday to wish Barbara well in retirement. In her thank you note, Barbara said, "I must say, for the first time in my life I was speechless."

Also in her note she recognized her Washington State family. "I have enjoyed working at the college and I’m very sincere in saying that everyone is family.  The first day I walked into the college I felt at home and have for my entire ten years here.Thank you again for all the presents but most of all for the friendships which I will truly miss."

Barbara said the retirement party may be the newest, but is one of her best memories while at Washington State. She quickly added that hosting a reception for Governor Taft and overseeing that project was exciting.

And true to form, Barbara wanted to be thorough. When interviewed for this article the one point she insisted be included is that thanks be expressed to Tonia Omspach and her assistants for pulling together the surprise event.

When asked for any comments about Barbara to be included in this article, Al Hoffman said, "She's bright, she's a great help, she's forward thinking, she's organized, she's efficient, she's friendly, she's productive, she's ...she's going to be greatly missed. What more can I say?"

Congratulations Barbara. Enjoy your retirement!
