Hand Sanitizer

The Washington State Community College Safety Committee, recognizing the need to protect the students, staff and visiting public from potentially infectious disease, authorized the purchase of 20 free standing hand sanitizer stations to be located in every building just inside the public access doorways. They are here. These ADA compliant “TC Auto Foam Dispensers” hold 1100 ml of hand sanitizing liquid foam good for 2700 operations without refilling the unit.

In an effort to keep Washington State students and faculty less susceptible to the H1N1 flu virus, the Safety Committee at the college opted to install hand disinfectant stations around campus.
Laboratory Health and Safety Coordinator Paula Johnson said, “The college is trying to reduce the potential outbreak of H1N1. Hand sanitizers must be at least 62 percent alcohol to be effective against the H1N1 virus, and the particular sanitizer to be used in these stations is.”

Safety Coordinator and Plant Manager Byron Hoffee shared that the pedestal disinfectant stations will dispense a foam hand disinfectant that is 67 percent alcohol with lotion. The stations will be located at the main entrance of the child care building, all three library entrances, both entrances to the Center for Business and Technology, the north and rear entrances of the Arts & Sciences Center, the front entrance of the Main Building, the rear of the business wing, the bridge entrance, the engineering wing, and the café and vending areas. Hoffee relayed that the units ordered are the same ones being used by Camden Clark Memorial Hospital and that the disinfectant foam is effective on H1N1, MRSA, and many bloodborne pathogens and other infectious diseases.

Hoffee added, “In addition, the college is providing faculty and staff with containers of Clorox disinfectant wipes for use in their offices. These measures are being taken, in part, as a result of the current H1N1 virus threat, but also to promote a healthy college learning environment.”

Troop Care Package

Submitted by: Sara Arnold, Faculty

My younger brother,  Marine Lance Corporal Jessup M. Camacho, is currently stationed in Iraq. He, along with his fellow Marines, will be spending the holidays, both Thanksgiving and Christmas, in Iraq. Therefore, in an effort to make the desert feel more like home (if it is even possible), I am putting together a care package for his platoon with a holiday theme.  Any donation is welcome to make their stay over there a little bit better.

Posted on my door (E-103F) are a few pictures of his platoon and a list of items specifically requested, that might just make life a little more normal for them. Items like candies, snacks and other small items that we take for granted are very appreciated. I will take the items that they are requesting and package them the way that we have our holidays dinners set-up (a turkey box, yam box, pumpkin pie box, etc.). for more information about the box, please contact me, Sara Arnold, at sarnold1@wscc.edu or at ext. 1808. More information can also be found on my office door, E103F.

Remembering our Veterans

Kevin Conley

Sergeant Elmer Conley served in the 1st Marine Division during World War II. While the War was not something he ever talked about to his son, Kevin (director of student development), today Kevin proudly shares a variety photos in the display case in the Main Building.

On Feb. 1, 1941 the 1st Marine Division was activated to Japan while aboard the USS Texas. Sgt. Conley served in Okinawa and Palau, Japan. After the war he was sent to China and was the only noncommissioned officer to be sent. It was while he was in China that Sgt. Conley developed his love and skill for shooting pictures and collecting cameras. He shot pictures of Chiang Kai-Shek and was awarded the second highest cross offered at the time from the Chinese leader.

Washington State Community College honors active duty and military veterans. In the display case you will find photographs, including those shot by Sgt. Conley, and other memorabilia, such as the Purple Heart, Cross of War, Good Conduct and Bronze Star Medals of Jesse D. Silcott, father-in-law to Ralph C. Tepe, professor of literature and composition.

The items will be on display through Dec. 7, the Day of Infamy.
