Evergreen Child Development Center earns National NAEYC Accreditation

Submitted by: Amy Beardmore

Program Among the Top in the Nation by Earning NAEYC Accreditation

Evergreen

The Evergreen Child Development Center has earned accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) – the nation’s leading organization of early childhood professionals.

To earn NAEYC Accreditation, the Evergreen Child Development Center went through an extensive Self-Study process, measuring the program and its services against the 10 NAEYC Early Childhood Program Standards and more than 400 related Accreditation Criteria.  The program received NAEYC Accreditation after a site visit by NAEYC Assessors to ensure that the program meets each of the ten program standards.  NAEYC-accredited programs are also subject to unannounced visits during their accreditation, which lasts for five years.

The Evergreen Child Development Center is the only child care center Accredited in Washington County.  In Ohio, only 234 out of 4239 ODJFS licensed child care centers are NAEYC Accredited.

The NAEYC Accreditation system was created to set professional standards for early childhood education, and to help families identify high-quality preschools, child care centers and other early education programs.  To earn NAEYC Accreditation, a program must meet each of the 10 NAEYC Early Childhood Program Standards which go above and beyond licensing requirements.

River Cities Film Series

Submitted by: Mark Nutter

The River Cities Film Series is going on hiatus for 2010. The series has had a great run over the past ten years, but in 2009, attendance and donations were down. Additionally, one of our primary suppliers, New Yorker Films, went out of business in February. At the same time, access to a wide variety of films through services like Netflix and online downloads has increased the overall availability of foreign and independent films for home viewing.

Both Washington State Community College and Marietta College are considering new options for bringing films to our community. For example, Washington State is discussing including films as part of the Evergreen Humanities Series in 2011.

We thank all of our patrons for your support over the past ten years. In particular, we thank Dr. Zane Lazer and Eye Care Associates for his steadfast leadership and the firm’s generous financial support. We also thank all of the WSCC faculty and staff who have worked diligently to present the series on our campus since 1999.

Watch On Campus for more information. In 2011, we hope to again be offering fine films to the Mid-Ohio Valley in some format.

"Secret Santa" 2009

Submitted by: Andrea Richardson

The Washington State Community College Secret Santa Committee is gearing up to help our students and their families who are in need this year.  There are many ways to help, including shopping, wrapping gifts and donating.

If you are interested in shopping, wrapping or if you know a student who may need help this holiday season please e-mail Shirley Carna at scarna@wscc.edu or Andrea Richardson at arichardson@wscc.edu.  If you are interested in donating to Secret Santa you can do so through the Business Office through Dec. 1 or you can place your donation in the container at the front desk (marked Secret Santa).  Due to current economic conditions our student needs are up but donations are down.  With your help we can make this year’s Secret Santa endeavor a success.
