Washington State awarded top blood donor site
Bi-annually, Marietta Memorial Hospital hosts a Blood Donor Appreciation Dinner. Washington State was invited this year for being the top blood donor site, having 180 pints of blood donated in the past 2 years. A big thank you to all who participated. MMH is one of the two independent blood banks in the State of Ohio. The blood donations MMH receives are used to care for patients in the Strecker Cancer Center, surgery patients and patients brought in to the Emergency Department.
With just one pint of blood we have the possibility of saving three lives! Please encourage everyone you know to donate, it could save your life or the life of a family member some day!
Washington State’s next blood drive is during Spring Quarter on May 12 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Bobble-head mania!
Whether it’s the bobble head that looks like Rob Kinker or the many sports figure favorites that he owns, his collection has become quite the conversation piece. Just like when Mike Whitnable, registrar, put his presidential collection of bobble heads into the display case in the Main Building, immediately people were stopping to look and talk about the unique figurines.
Mike started collecting the presidential bobble heads about six years ago.“Unlike the sports bobble heads, not as many people collect the Presidents or other political figures. People tend to have strong feelings one way or another towards many of our leaders so they become real conversation pieces. In the last few elections I’ve gotten much more interested in the process,” said Mike.
Sixteen of the 44 presidents make up Mike’s collection. He keeps his eye out for President’s Ford and Johnson, two he would really like to add to the set. While the president collection has become quite the talking piece, his favorite bobble head is his sports hero, Walter Payton.
“I also have an Albert Einstein bobble head I keep in my office to create conversation and inspire deep thought,” tells Mike. That’s the bobble head that everyone likens to Rob Kinker. Now there’s a deep thought!

Announcements from the Safety Committee
Lab Etiquette
Laboratory safety is an integral component of all of the sciences on this campus. Our faculty and students are trained to be prudent stewards of safety and are expected to follow lab safety policies and procedures at all times.
The health technology programs have their own designated labs. These include practical nursing, associate degree nursing, respiratory therapy, physical therapy, radiology, massage therapy, medical laboratory, biological sciences, and intermediate EMT. Within these labs, students are taught fundamental skills that are necessary in order for them to practice and perform in a clinical setting or on the job. Radiology students are the exception. They receive most of their training in the clinical setting. Universal precautions, one of the most important safety issues, must be practiced by all faculty and students. This involves using personal protective equipment such as eye protection, face protection, gowns, and gloves. In addition, blood borne pathogens, needle stick, hand washing, biohazards, and medical waste policies are covered.
Labs that involve the use of chemicals have different safety issues. Many chemicals are harmful and access to these labs and prep rooms are restricted to trained personnel. All chemicals should be considered hazardous and handled as such. These lab doors must be locked and shut when the labs and/or prep room are not in use.
Microbiology and Medical laboratories are especially vulnerable to blood borne pathogens. These labs are listed as biohazard level 2 and access is restricted.
The cadaver lab is a valuable asset to this institution. Many community colleges in the state of Ohio do not have this type of lab. We use the lab for learning experiences in our anatomy & physiology courses. This lab is not to be used for “show and tell.” These are human bodies and respect must be exhibited at all times. All students and faculty are required to wear eye protection. This also expands to any visitors to the lab. This eye protection is provided in the lab. Also, the lab door must always be closed and locked.
The goal of any lab safety program is to protect faculty and students from accidents. There are many hazards associated with laboratories and it is our goal to practice good safety. With this said, it is important for others to understand that our laboratories can be a dangerous place and access to them is limited.
Ice and weather hazards
Your physical plant staff have done a wonderful job keeping our campus walks, roadways and parking lots in good shape especially given the severe icing conditions of recent days. In support of these efforts, we use a calcium chloride product that melts ice/snow even if the weather gets to 20 below zero and operate two snow plow trucks and numerous snow blowers.
However, one disturbing problem has been increasingly familiar this winter, that of people taking down our yellow caution tape and/or moving barricades placed to protect the health and safety of everyone. When conditions reach a critical state and there is simply not enough man power or time to open all avenues of travel, the staff will close routes deemed least traveled or necessary using yellow caution tape and barricades. These closed routes are often VERY treacherous and should be avoided. Routes typically closed include but are not limited to:
- Hillside steps
- Hill roadway sidewalk
- Parking area to the left at top of hill
- Sidewalk beside the B-wing and lower B-Wing entrances (side and rear – entrances not unlocked for ingress)
Pedestrians are strongly encouraged to use the bridge for main building access from the upper lot in these conditions.
Please don’t place yourself and others at greater risk by removing the caution tape or barriers.
Peanut butter recall
With the Safety Committee’s idea of keeping faculty, staff and students informed of safety issues, please see the below link to the FDA on the recent concern over the recall of certain peanut butter items.

This link will change as more items are added to the list.
