COVID-19 Updates

COVID-19 Update for Students: September 1, 2021

COVID-19 Update for Students: September 1, 2021

Since the beginning of fall semester, WSCO has been actively monitoring the number of COVID-19 cases both on campus and in our community. In response to the increasing number of cases at WSCO and in the Mid-Ohio Valley, we are updating our mask protocols to enhance the health and safety of our campus community.

Effective Tuesday, September 7, students, faculty, staff, and visitors to WSCO are required to wear masks indoors, regardless of their vaccination status. Masks will be required outdoors for unvaccinated individuals when they cannot maintain physical distancing. Vaccinated people are not required to mask outdoors.

WSCO is committed to creating a safe learning environment and our hope is to continue in-person learning throughout this academic year. To do so, employees and students are encouraged to get vaccinated. COVID-19 vaccines have proven to be effective at preventing serious illness and death. For your convenience, the Washington County Health Department will be on the WSCO campus to provide the Pfizer vaccination on Monday, September 13 from 10 a.m. to noon. The vaccination is free to anyone age 16 or older. Please click here if you plan to participate and you will receive additional details.

Please continue to check your email for updates. Thank you in advance for your role in keeping our campus community safe. We will get through this together.

Sincerely,

Dr. Vicky Wood

Campus Restart Plan Update: July 8, 2020

Important Update: Campus Restart Plan

As we return to our daily activities and create new modes of operation, it will be anything but routine. With the new normal comes new expectations. While together, we need to work together for the safety of our entire campus community. As we prepare to launch fall semester in six weeks, I wanted to share some important updates about our ongoing campus response to COVID-19.

Masks Required
As part of our safety protocols, all WSCO staff, faculty, students, and guests are required to wear a mask or other type of face-covering while on campus. Cloth masks, as well as disposable masks, are available for those who need them at the health check-in station in the Library. If an individual is unable to wear a mask due to health reasons, WSCO has a form to request an exemption for facial covering available here. Individuals will not be permitted in campus buildings without a facial covering or an approved exemption.

Health Concerns
WSCO recognizes that individuals with underlying health conditions may opt to request temporary reasonable accommodation related to COVID-19. The form is available here and should be submitted to the Human Resources Office (for staff/faculty) or the Office of Disabilities Services (for students).

Exposures or Symptoms
While Washington County does not have a high number of reported COVID cases, we realize that individuals could still be exposed to someone with coronavirus. In conjunction with the Marietta-Belpre City Health Department, we have established the following protocols to deal with possible exposure. You can view the list of local testing sites to find a testing location near you.

  •  If exposed to someone who has tested positive, please do NOT report to campus.
    •  Wait two days and get tested on day three. This helps prevent false-negative test results.
    •  While waiting on test results, do NOT report to campus.
    •  If the test is negative, report to campus.
    •  If the test is positive, do NOT report to campus. Follow instructions from the Health Department. The Health Department will notify HR as part of contact tracing procedures.
  •  If you are experiencing any symptoms (fever, cough, shortness of breath), please do NOT report to campus.
    •  Stay home until you are free of fever (without the use of medication) for at least 72 hours (three full days) AND at least seven days have passed since symptoms first began.
    •  If the test is positive, do NOT report to campus. Follow instructions from Health Department. The Health Department will notify HR as part of contact tracing procedure.

With so many unknowns ahead, I hope our students can take comfort in knowing they are supported, whether in-person or remotely, by such a terrific team of individuals at Washington State College of Ohio.

With appreciation,

Dr. Vicky Wood, President

Campus Restart Plan Update: June 19, 2020

Important Update: Campus Restart Plan

Campus Restart Plan
Last month, we announced our plans for a phased restart of our on-campus operations. At the time, we were only able to outline plans for June operations. After discussions with the Board of Trustees, we are now announcing our plans for July and August.

June 29: Summer lab classes students and faculty return
July 6: Administrative and support staff return to offices; Monday-Thursday [with remote work continuing on Friday mornings through July 31]
August 3:  Faculty Prep Week
August 10:  Faculty Return for Fall In-service
August 17: Fall Semester Begins

At this time, we are planning to conduct fall courses on campus in addition to our typical online and blended formats. Our administration is monitoring the COVID-19 situation closely and we will be prepared, if necessary, to amend our plans based on new developments or recommendations from the Ohio Department of Health. Once again, the health and safety of our campus community is our highest priority. If you have questions regarding the above timeline, please connect with your supervisor or the HR office.

Thank you for everything that you do to support our students and move our campus forward.

With appreciation,

Dr. Vicky Wood, President

Campus Restart June 1 at WSCO

Important: Campus Restart June 1 at WSCO

We’re extremely excited to restart our on-campus operations. As we continue to follow state recommendations and best practices to ensure the safety of our campus community, we want to let you know what to expect when you first return to campus.

Campus Restart

As mentioned in the Campus Restart plan, the campus opens on June 1 to a limited number of staff members, approved by supervisors, as well as faculty, students and registered guests. Please note that walk-in guests are not encouraged at this time. Students who are not enrolled in a summer course are asked to call ahead to set up an appointment with a staff member/faculty advisor. Social distancing will be observed in all offices and classrooms. Please see below for protocol to follow when arriving on campus.

Summer Hours - Starting June 1

WSCO will observe revised campus hours during summer.

WSCO Campus Open | Monday-Thursday | 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. | Closed Friday
Offices Open On-Campus | Monday - Thursday   | 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Offices Open Remotely | Friday   | 7:30 a.m. to Noon

Note: As part of our restart plan, we are only announcing the campus/office hours for June at this time.  Campus/office hours for July will be published at a later date. Please remember that campus will be closed Friday, July 3 in observance of Independence Day.

Arrival to Campus/Daily Health Checks

When reporting to campus each day, all students, faculty/staff, and registered guests must report to the Library for mandatory temperature checks. At that time, you will be asked a series of health questions and will receive a colored wrist-band to wear which indicates that you have completed the health check.

In addition to mandatory temperature checks, face coverings are required by all while on campus.

The First Day You Report to Campus-New ID Badge

All campus doors are now fitted with the card-reader system approved by the WSCO Board of Trustees last fall. Students, staff, and faculty will be issued a new ID badge that will be used to unlock the external doors on campus.  Individuals can pick up their badges at the Library on the first day they return to campus.  All buildings, with the exception of the Library, will now be kept locked and will be accessible only with a new WSCO ID badge.

Stay Informed

WSCO is working diligently to keep our campus community updated as the COVID-19 situation evolves. Please continue to check wscc.edu/coronavirus for updates on our plans to restart campus. Questions?  Email us at coronavirus@wscc.edu.

Thank you for your willingness to adapt over the past several months.  We are looking forward to restarting on-campus operations and appreciate your efforts to support a safe and welcoming learning environment at WSCO.

COVID-19 Update for Students: April 22, 2020

COVID-19 Update for Students: April 22, 2020

Dear Campus Community,

I wanted to share an update with you regarding our plans to reopen campus. While much of this plan remains fluid, we are actively preparing for what lies ahead as we slowly transition back to campus. Previously, we had planned to reopen on Friday, May 1.  However, it is clear that with the current status of the pandemic, that will not be possible.  Below are the updated plans to reopen WSCO.

Phase 1-Tentatively May 1 through May 31
Students: Students will complete spring coursework remotely.  The spring semester has been extended by one week and will end on Friday, May 15. Lab courses that cannot be completed remotely will be completed in Phase 2 of reopening (see below). Students will receive an Incomplete grade for these courses at the end of spring semester. The Incomplete grades will be replaced with a letter grade when the coursework is completed.

Phase 2-Tentatively beginning June 1
Students: Students who have been unable to complete their spring semester coursework remotely will complete their laboratory classes on campus beginning June 1. Students will receive communication about when/where they are to report for coursework in May. Strict social distancing, use of masks, and temperature checks will be observed.

Summer courses will begin as scheduled on June 1 with most courses utilizing remote delivery. There will be exceptions for some courses that will need to meet on campus. Instructors will communicate directly with students in these courses with details.

As the situation evolves in the coming weeks, we will continue to provide updates. We are committed to doing everything possible to ensure the safety of our campus community while supporting our students in their educational journey.

These are uncertain times but Washington State College of Ohio will continue to adapt and innovate as challenges arise. And most importantly, we will get through this together.

Best regards,

COVID-19 Update for Students: April 1, 2020

COVID-19 Update for Students: April 1, 2020

Dear WSCO Students,

I hope this message finds you safe and healthy. Let me begin by thanking you for helping us successfully make the transition to remote delivery classes. I realize it hasn’t been easy.

As you know, our response to COVID-19 has continued to shift and change as things develop and state and national officials release new orders and recommendations.

Our plan to resume normal operations on April 7 has now been extended. We will continue with remote instructional delivery through April 30.

We are also extending the Spring semester by 1 week. This will move finals week to May 11-15.
Registration for Summer and Fall classes will, however, open next week on April 6 as originally planned. Our new course schedules for both summer and fall are now live.

The start of summer semester, June 1 is also unchanged.

Remember, even though we are spread across the Mid-Ohio Valley, only seeing one another through computer screens, we are all in this together. As long as we continue to work together, we will get through these challenging times.

Best regards,

COVID-19 Update for Students: March 22, 2020

COVID-19 Update for Students: March 22, 2020

Dear WSCO Students,

In response to the Stay At Home Order issued today by the Ohio Department of Health, Washington State College of Ohio will be closing campus, including all offices, classrooms, labs, and buildings effective today, Sunday, March 22, 2020. This closure will continue through Monday, April 6, 2020. College administration will continue to monitor this situation and provide updates when they become available.

With this campus closure, all spring semester classes will continue in a remote capacity.  In addition, office and support services will continue remotely with staff working from home. Students who were scheduled to be on campus for labs starting tomorrow will NOT report to campus. Instructors will be in touch with you regarding next steps.

We understand that some students have difficulty accessing technology.  Although we had planned to maintain hours for the WSCO Library, as well as computer labs, that is no longer going to be possible. To help with Internet access, we are expanding our WSCO Wi-Fi to extend into the lower parking lot (also referred to as the staff/faculty lot). While our buildings are closed, you are welcome to park in the lot and connect to our Wi-Fi.

We are currently working through additional plans to support students who have limited access to a computer or the Internet. If you are a student that anticipates difficulty in accessing technology during this temporary campus closure, we would like to hear from you via this survey

Our staff and faculty, while working remotely, are ever-present to assist you as you transition into remote delivery of your courses. Staff will be available during normal business hours from home to answer your questions. Faculty will be available through online courses. The situation we are facing is temporary, but please know that our commitment to your success remains steadfast.

Best regards,

COVID-19 Update for Students: March 20, 2020

A Message from the President

Dear Campus Community,

I would like to thank each of you for your patience, innovation, and collaboration during this extraordinary and challenging time. The WSCO campus community continues to monitor guidance and best practices from local, state and federal agencies as we respond to the COVID-19 outbreak. Information and resources on the college’s coronavirus website are updated regularly, including today’s announcements.

Required Temperature Checks

WSCO will require temperature checks for everyone seeking entry to campus buildings, beginning on Monday, March 23. To facilitate this process, we will consolidate campus entrances to include the WSCO Library, Main Building-Bridge and Main Building-Lobby entrances. All other building entrances will be closed until further notice. Note: A no-contact thermometer will be available in the Library.

Remote Course Delivery

WSCO faculty members teaching face-to-face courses have completed their plans for remote and alternative delivery methods of instruction. These courses will begin instruction on Monday, March 23 utilizing these new instructional plans. All students should be communicating with their instructors about next steps.

Internet Access

As students and faculty begin using remote course delivery options, we understand that WSCO students have varying levels of Internet access. To help support our students with Internet access, WSCO students are encouraged to utilize the computers and Internet in the WSCO Library and computer labs. Starting March 23, WSCO will be extending library hours to:

  • Mondays through Thursdays: 7:30am to 9:00pm
  • Fridays: 7:30am to 4:00pm
  • Saturdays: 10:00am to 4:00pm

There are additional options for Internet access which are detailed on our COVID-19 Student FAQ web page.

Staying Connected

All members of the campus community should continue to check WSCO email as well as our website for updates. As questions arise, you can email coronavirus@wscc.edu and we’ll quickly respond.

I want to reiterate my gratitude for your support and flexibility during this time. We are learning and growing together as we navigate these unchartered waters.

COVID-19 Update for Students: March 13, 2020

Washington State College of Ohio is dedicated to promoting the health, safety and well-being of our student and employee populations. In support of that goal, we are releasing this update to inform you of the actions we are taking to assess, prevent, protect, and respond to COVID-19.

While there are no WSCO campus-associated cases of the coronavirus, we are being proactive in an effort to prevent illness. We continue to align our recommendations with and follow guidelines from Governor DeWine, the Ohio Association for Community Colleges (OACC), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization, and the Ohio Department of Health.

The changes below will allow us to continue the education of our students while protecting our community.

Office Hours

Washington State College of Ohio is here to serve as a resource to our community. All WSCO offices will be open for business. We ask that everyone remain flexible as we continue to make changes as the situation evolves and more information becomes available. Hours, until further notice, are as follows:

  • General Office Hours: 7:30am to 4:30pm, M-F
  • Library: 7:30am to 7:00pm, M-Th; 7:30am to 4:00pm, F

Face-to-Face Classes

We will take precautions to limit the spread of COVID-19 by postponing face-to-face classes next week, March 16–20, 2020. During this time, faculty will be preparing their courses to be moved to online, remote, or other delivery formats. Students will receive communication next week from faculty on how their face-to-face classes will be delivered from March 23 through April 3. Please note that all online, blended, practicum, internship, and clinic placements/courses will continue as scheduled.

Since many of our students do not have broadband Internet access at home, we will offer open computer labs on campus to provide students access while respecting appropriate social distancing recommendations from health professionals. Computer lab hours will be announced prior to March 23.

If we become aware of any condition that would make our campus unsafe, please be assured we will implement immediate safety measures until those conditions have been addressed. The health and safety of our campus community are our top priority and we are committed to doing our part to help keep you safe. Faculty and students should continue to check their WSCO email regularly for updates. In the meantime, students who are unable to meet the requirements of their course(s) should contact their instructor and faculty advisor to discuss the best next steps.

Directions for Individuals Experiencing Flu-like Symptoms

Individuals experiencing flu-like symptoms should seek medical attention and follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines including:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands
  • Avoid close contact with others, especially people who exhibit symptoms of infection
  • Stay home while you are sick and seek medical treatment and to prevent further exposure
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces
  • Avoid unnecessary travel

Important: Students should not attend school or classes if they are displaying flu-like symptoms, such as fever, cough, or vomiting. Students should remain out of school until the student is symptom-free, without the use of medication, for 24 hours.

College Preparations

Our facilities team is continuing efforts to sanitize the campus including frequently disinfecting often-touched surfaces such as door handles, countertops, keypads, and restroom surfaces. To help employees and students with disinfecting efforts, hand sanitizer bottles and wipes can be found at the front desk of each building and in many of the more commonly used administrative areas.

We embrace our diverse culture. Although we are not recommending widespread use of face masks or respirators at this time for asymptomatic people outside of a clinical setting, some individuals may choose to wear a mask during cold and flu season. Please continue to treat all employees and students with mutual respect and consideration.

Travel Disclosure

Students who have traveled on a cruise ship or have returned from a country at a Level 3 Travel Health Notice are asked to contact their physician to be screened for the virus or stay home for a period of 14 days from the time they left the area at risk and practice social distancing. Click here for the CDC travel guidelines. If an individual has traveled to impacted countries as identified by the CDC or is aware they may have been exposed to COVID-19, WSCO is requiring that the individual disclose that information before returning to classes or visiting campus by filling out the disclosure form here.

Events

All Washington State College of Ohio events scheduled through April 30, 2020 will be postponed until further notice. We will be contacting external organizations with events scheduled on our campus to determine appropriate next steps to ensure safety. No new, non-essential events will be scheduled on the WSCO campus through April 10, 2020. We will continue to monitor events and will share plans prior to April 10, 2020 to end this restriction early, or, if needed, extend it.

Looking Ahead

Due to the rapidly evolving nature of the current situation, guidelines may change as new information emerges. The college will continue to share new information as it becomes available via WSCO email and www.wscc.edu/coronavirus/.

While this is a challenging time, we are gratified by the flexibility and spirit of cooperation that we have experienced from all members of our campus community as well as our external partners. We are all working hard to keep our students and community safe while continuing to support students’ academic success.

COVID-19 Update for Students: March 11, 2020

COVID-19 Update for Students: March 11, 2020

Dear Campus Community,

Understanding the vital importance of protecting public health and the well-being of our students, faculty, staff, and the community we serve, Washington State College of Ohio is prepared to support Governor DeWine in his effort to slow the potential spread of the coronavirus in our state.

We will take precautions to limit the spread of COVID-19 by postponing face-to-face classes next week, March 16–20, 2020. During this time, faculty will be preparing their courses to be moved to online, remote, or other delivery formats. Students will receive communications from faculty on how the face-to-face classes will be delivered March 23 through April 3.

All online classes will continue as scheduled. Students with clinical, practicum, and internship placements will continue to attend as scheduled. Since many of our students do not have broadband Internet access at home, we will offer open computer labs on campus to provide students access while respecting appropriate social distancing recommendations from health professionals.

WSCO will remain open during this time and continue to serve students. As this situation continues to evolve, student success remains our top priority! The college will continue to share additional information and resources with the campus and community as it develops through email and our website.

COVID-19 Update for Faculty/Staff: September 1, 2021

Remote Work Discussion
Across Ohio and beyond, the pandemic has created opportunities for institutions of higher education to learn more about remote work and remote learning. Moving forward, our campus will continue to explore policies, procedures, and philosophies involving work and learning in a remote capacity. As we do so, we must continue to focus on our mission of supporting student success and make decisions that will enhance our ability to positively affect the lives and futures of the students that we serve.

I want to thank every member of our campus community for your steadfast commitment to our students. With so many unknowns ahead, our students take great comfort in knowing they are supported, whether in-person or remotely, by such a terrific team of individuals at Washington State College of Ohio.

With appreciation,

COVID-19 Update for Faculty/Staff: April 22, 2020

COVID-19 Update for Faculty/Staff: April 22, 2020

Dear Campus Community,

I wanted to share an update with you regarding our plans to reopen campus. While much of this plan remains fluid, we are actively preparing for what lies ahead as we slowly transition back to campus. Previously, we had planned to reopen on Friday, May 1.  However, it is clear that with the current status of the pandemic, that will not be possible.  Below are the updated plans to reopen WSCO.

Phase 1-Tentatively May 1 through May 31
Faculty/Staff: The WSCO campus will remain closed to visitors during the month of May.  A small number of staff (approved by supervisors) will return to campus to maintain critical operations and offset remote work challenges (7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.).  Strict social distancing measures, use of masks, and temperature checks will be observed.

Phase 2-Tentatively beginning June 1
Faculty/Staff: The WSCO campus will be open for visitors by appointment and for students who are enrolled in face-to-face labs.  Remote work will continue with the exception of a small number of on-campus staff (approved by supervisors) to maintain operations and provide support for on-campus courses/labs.  Strict social distancing measures, use of masks and temperature checks will be observed.

COVID-19 Update for Faculty/Staff: April 1, 2020

COVID-19 Update for Faculty/Staff: April 1, 2020

Dear Campus Community,

I hope this message finds you safe and healthy. Let me begin by thanking you for helping us successfully make the transition to remote delivery classes. I realize it hasn’t been easy.

As you know, our response to COVID-19 has continued to shift and change as things develop and state and national officials release new orders and recommendations.

Our plan to resume normal operations on April 7 has now been extended. We will continue with remote instructional delivery and work through April 30.

We are also extending the Spring semester by 1 week. This will move finals week to May 11-15 with final grades due on May 19.

When advising students, please note that registration for Summer and Fall classes will open next week on April 6 as originally planned.

COVID-19 Update for Faculty/Staff: March 20, 2020

COVID-19 Update for Faculty/Staff: March 20, 2020

There are additional options for Internet access which are detailed on our COVID-19 Faculty/Staff FAQ web page.

Best regards,

COVID-19 Update for Faculty/Staff: March 17, 2020

COVID-19 Update for Faculty/Staff: March 17, 2020

WSCO has an important update about Commencement, our proudest day at the College. Based on the information available regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, we have to act in accordance with recommendations from federal, state, and local officials to limit group gatherings to 25. As a result, we have made the difficult decision to postpone the May Commencement ceremony.  The College is continuing to monitor the situation and will communicate with the campus in the coming weeks with either a rescheduled date or cancellation.  It’s important to note that students who complete their coursework and are eligible to graduate at the end of spring semester, will be able to do so.

Washington State College of Ohio is here to serve as a resource to our community. All WSCO offices will be open for business. We ask that everyone remain flexible as we continue to make changes as the situation evolves and more information becomes available.

Face-to-Face Classes

We will take precautions to limit the spread of COVID-19 by postponing face-to-face classes next week, March 16–20, 2020. During this time, faculty will be preparing their courses to be moved to online, remote, or other delivery formats. Students will receive communications next week from faculty on how their face-to-face classes will be delivered from March 23 through April 3. Please note that all online, blended, practicum, internship, and clinic placements/courses will continue as scheduled.

Since many of our students do not have broadband Internet access at home, we will offer open computer labs on campus to provide students access while respecting appropriate social distancing recommendations from health professionals.

If we become aware of any condition that would make our campus unsafe, please be assured we will implement immediate safety measures until those conditions have been addressed. The health and safety of our campus community are our top priority and we are committed to doing our part to help keep you safe.  Faculty and staff should continue to check their WSCO email regularly for updates.

Campus Partner Hours of Operation

In light of recent and ongoing developments, certain campus partners have altered their hours:

  • Bookstore: 9:00am to 4:00pm, M-Th; 9am to noon, F
  • Cissy’s Food Service: 10:00am to 2:00pm, M-Th

Employees with Illness

We request employees to notify their supervisor and remain home when ill and disclose symptoms of acute respiratory illness to their healthcare provider. All leave policies will apply, staff should contact the Office of Human Resources regarding leave management and associated workplace issues.  During this time of Ohio’s State of Emergency, we will waive the requirement to have a physician’s note for absences of more than three days.  If you have flu-like symptoms, such as fever, cough or vomiting, we urge you to stay home.  You should remain home until you are symptom-free, without the use of medication, for 24 hours.

Travel Disclosure

Employees who have traveled on a cruise ship or have returned from a country at a Level 3 Travel Health Notice are asked to contact their physician to be screened for the virus or stay home for a period of 14 days from the time they left the area at risk and practice social distancing.  Click here for the CDC travel guidelines. If an individual has traveled to impacted countries as identified by the CDC or is aware they may have been exposed to COVID-19, WSCO is requiring that the individual disclose that information before returning to campus by filling out the disclosure form here.

College Travel

Effective immediately and until further notice, all non-essential travel is suspended. This includes new travel as well as any currently booked trips through April 30. If you need assistance in canceling travel or requesting refunds for pre-paid travel, please contact me.

Events

All Washington State College of Ohio events scheduled through April 30, 2020, will be postponed until further notice. We will be contacting external organizations with events scheduled on our campus to determine appropriate next steps to ensure safety. No new, non-essential events will be scheduled on the WSCO campus through April 30, 2020. We will continue to monitor events and will share plans prior to April 10, 2020, to end this restriction early, or, if needed, extend it.

For those desiring to wear personal protective equipment while they are working on campus, gloves and face masks are available and may be obtained in Human Resources.  Please continue to treat all employees and students with mutual respect and consideration.

Working Remotely

We are prepared to consider requests to work remotely for employees whose job responsibilities permit it and the needs of the college are met.  If you have a medical/personal need and would like to be considered to work remotely during the State of Emergency, please review section 4.430 of the policies and procedures manual and discuss the request with your supervisor.

Looking Ahead

Due to the rapidly evolving nature of the current situation, guidelines may change as new information emerges.  The college will continue to share new information as it becomes available via WSCO email and www.wscc.edu/coronavirus/.

While this is a challenging time, I am gratified by the flexibility and spirit of cooperation that we have experienced from all members of our campus community as well as our external partners.  We are all working hard to keep our students and community safe while continuing to support students’ academic success.
