Washington State College of Ohio’s November Student of the Month is a craftsman who is taking his skills to the next level. Creighton Henthorn is challenging the traditional career paths for machinists and welders by applying those skills and techniques towards mastering the art of gunsmithing.
Prior to enrolling at WSCO, Henthorn served as a staff sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. After his retirement from the Marine Corps in 2014, he set out to do something he enjoyed-gunsmithing. He enrolled at the Pennsylvania Gunsmith School and completed their 16-month program. But he realized that one aspect of the craft which still challenged him was welding. It was his desire to hone his skills that led him to Washington State’s welding program.
Henthorn is among more than 50 Veterans who have chosen to attend WSCO. Ren’ee Rector, Veteran school certifying official at WSCO, immediately recognized Henthorn’s ambition. “Creighton is a well-rounded and driven individual,” she said. “He sees something he wants and works very hard to obtain it.”
Josh Horner, WSCO welding instructor and program coordinator, applauds Henthorn’s work ethic in the classroom setting as well. “I have had the pleasure of working with Creighton for the past year. He came to WSCO’s welding program with great initiative and with a positive attitude,” said Horner. “He never backs down from a challenge and takes great pride in his work. Creighton proudly served his country and it’s an honor for me to have him in my program.”
When asked to give advice to others who may be considering college, Henthorn doesn’t hesitate. “Don’t be afraid to think out of the box,” he advised. “Find classes that fit into your trade.” Upon completion of the welding program at WSCO, Henthorn would like to open up his own gunsmithing shop in Parkersburg, West Virginia and make a career doing what he loves.
