The Upward Bound College Prep Academy is designed for area high school students who are interested in attending college but may need extra help in turning that interest into a reality. Funded through the U.S Department of Education, the Washington State Community College Upward Bound Academy provides academic, social, cultural, recreational, and counseling services in order to provide the student with the skills, motivation, and self-confidence necessary for success in college.

Eligibility

You are eligible for Upward Bound if you attend high school at Belpre, Caldwell, Fort Frye, Frontier, Marietta, Morgan, Warren, or Waterford. In addition you must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Neither parent has earned a bachelor's (four year) degree; OR
  • Their family's income does not exceed the federal guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Education.

Students meeting the eligibility criteria must show potential for academic success and have the desire to increase knowledge, skills, and confidence.

Upward Bound has two phases:

  • During the school year, we provide tutoring, counseling and help you develop your study skills. You will visit the Washington State Community College campus one Saturday per month to receive tutoring, learn study and leadership skills, and also participate in a wide variety of programs. You will take field trips and participate in cultural/recreational activities that reward you for your hard work.
  • During the summer, you will take part in a six week residential program. You will live on the Marietta College campus and take interesting courses at Washington State Community College including instruction in Math, English, a lab-science and a foreign language. While living on campus, you will enjoy diverse social activities and travel.

What is expected of the student:

Students are expected to make a sincere commitment to participate fully in the academic year and summer activities and to challenge themselves at their high schools by undertaking a college preparatory curriculum. Students are also expected to be involved in community service programs.

What does it cost?

NOTHING! The student's family pays nothing for regularly scheduled academic year and summer program activities.
